Floral Design is all about the creative and artistic arrangement of flowers and plant materials to create visually striking designs for everyday use and special occasions. Whether you’re learning how to make a round arrangement, plan a wedding bouquet, design wearable flowers, or build centerpiece displays around a theme, this project will help you develop both your floral design skills and your creative thinking. You’ll learn how to select and condition plant materials, apply design principles such as balance, proportion, and color harmony, and express your own artistic style through floral work.

Exploring 4-H Floriculture - Floral Design

Spark Activity: Create a Mini Round Arrangement

Try this quick, hands-on floral design challenge using materials you can find at home or in your yard!

What You’ll Need:

  • 5–9 flowers (fresh or garden-grown)
  • A small handful of greenery or foliage
  • A small container (cup, jar, or vase)
  • Water
  • Scissors or garden snips

What To Do:

  1. Prepare your flowers. Trim stems at an angle and remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.
  2. Start with greenery. Place foliage around the edge of the container to form a circular outline.
  3. Build your shape. Add flowers one at a time, rotating the container as you go to create a balanced, rounded form.
  4. Create a focal point. Place one flower slightly lower or centered to draw attention.
  5. Step back and evaluate. Look at your arrangement from all sides. Is it balanced? Even? Visually pleasing?

Reflect:

  • Which flower became your focal point and why?
  • Did your arrangement look balanced from every angle?
  • What would you adjust next time?
