Jim Mayhew has served as a voice of reason and represented the youth of Mercer County for 35 years. He was a 10-year member of the New Windsor Livestock 4-H Club. Jim has served on the 4-H Youth Council, 4-H Swine committee, and as a 4-H Swine Superintendent. He has mentored many 4-H members in the livestock project areas. Specifically, in the swine area, Jim has taken it upon himself to lend advice and expertise to the swine project members. Selection, nutrition, health, and management are areas that he has shared his skill. He has taken the time to travel with the members and teach them swine selection. Jim’s knowledge of feed and nutrition has been an invaluable resource to the membership. Jim started the Balance Trait program in the swine barn, a program that rewarded production. He calculated rate-of-gain, carcass data through scanning and show ring placings. In addition, he volunteered his time to weigh pigs for nominations at shows. Many of the members that Jim influenced have careers in the swine industry today. He has led by example and taught the members that difficult decisions must be fair and all-inclusive. Jim is a quiet leader that leads by example, compassion, and sincerity.
