Sarah Carls was a 10 year member of the Buccaneers 4-H Club, a member 4-H Teen Federation and Teen Challenge all while contributing to helping to pass the Extension referendum. Deke was also a 10-year 4-H member for the Hayburners 4-H Club. Deke and Sarah both participated in Horse Bowl, Hippology and Horse Judging. Deke competed at Nationals in Horse Judging, and Sarah was an alternate on the 1999 National Judging Team National Horse Bowl champion team. Sara is currently a Leader of the Buccaneers and has been a Horse Superintendent for 17 years. She leads 3-4 horse practices every summer for kids to practice and has been a Judging Coach for a few years. She has worked for U of I Extension in the summer for 15 years at Camp Clover, military programs, science camp, fair help, etc. Dr. Deke Carls has been a volunteer Veterinarian at the fair for about 5 years. Deke assists with horse practice and doing clinics and lectures to 4-H youth.
