How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?

Holding leadership positions, speaking in front of others, and time management allowed me to become successful in my chosen career path. Looking back, I now realize that practicing these skills from an early age was essential in my personal development. 4-H and the mentors associated with this program are one of a kind.

Did 4-H instill a career path for you?

When I was 12 years old my parents purchased a young steer from Texas and told me I was responsible for feeding & showing him that year. The calf had a unique tri-colored hide; I named him Red Rock. I became very attached to him as I didn’t fully understand his fate at the end of the summer. As a young person I was extremely emotional when the time came to go to the slaughterhouse. Red Rock ended up winning the carcass class that year in my county. It was a hard learned lesson but allowed me to understand the life cycle of cattle and how they play such an important role in our food chain. This specific 4-H project gave me the drive that I have today to educate as many people as possible about where our food comes from.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in your career path?

Never stop learning! Higher education, whether is be agricultural related or not, will always come in handy at some point. Finding what you are passionate about is easy, it should come natural; I recommend thinking about what you would like to change in your specific industry. This will give you the drive to be successful and satisfied with your accomplishments.

What advice would you give a current 4-H member?

Never back down. If there are project areas you are interested in, take the leap and check them out, don't just stick with what you know. The best learning comes unexpectedly!

Why should young people join 4-H today?

Not only is it a valuable learning experience, but an opportunity to make new friends! you will be exposed to many new things and realize that the opportunities within the agriculture industry are endless!
