4-H has been a constant in the lives of Gail and Ellen Rapp. Gail grew up as part of the Otter Creek 4-H Club in LaSalle County, while Ellen was a member of Ancona Little Women 4-H Club in Livingston County. Gail focused on swine, photography and entomology and his work with welding became a passion to this day. Ellen focused on baking, sewing, flower arranging, and arts and craft, even continuing to show projects through the county fair’s adult opportunities. The couple continued their involvement in 4-H long after their days as club members ended. Over the years, the Rapps raised three children, all involved with 4-H. pToday the family tradition continues with their five grandchildren. Gail and Ellen have been leaders of the Wide Awake Timberline 4-H Club for over 40 years. Notable has been their work with their club’s annual Power Project Day. They spent many hours creating and researching a project that could be made in a few hours with multiple ages of kids. They would think for months about this and always be prepared on that day with a surprise project for the club members in hopes that this project would be exhibited at the fair or used in their home. They also served as show superintendents for many years. Gail now lives in rural Pontiac and his love for welding continues. He enjoys creating many unique pieces of metal art and donates many of his pieces to local benefit auctions. Ellen passed away in March 2020 and will be truly missed as she was a wonderful leader, mentor, volunteer, and friend to many.
