Favorite 4-H Projects:  Purebred Berkshire Gilt, Purebred Guernsey Calf, Corn My first project was a purebred Guernsey dairy heifer that my father bought for me, but when it came time for my project to be born, it turned out it was sterile, so no calf. Next I received a bred purebred Berkshire pig from the Lions Club, and the same result, sterile and no baby pigs. So, for the next project, I grew corn. And here is the closer, my wife and I have two children and they are adopted; I don't know what was in the water on the farm.

How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?

At the age of 12, I joined the O'Connell Rustlers 4-H Club. Even though I was a bashful farm kid, I was attracted to public speaking and continued that interest through high school, which led me to my broadcast career since 1952. During those years I continue to support 4-H financially and personally by promoting as many of the 4-H programs as time allows on my radio/TV broadcasts. 4-H has guided lifetime decisions for me in very positive ways.

Did 4-H instill a career path for you?

4-H taught me to get up in front of an audience and express my thoughts and learn to express my ideas. This was a life changing situation. 4-H taught me to finish a job, whether that was with my animals or other projects. Learn all 4-H has to offer and sooner or later you will use these skills in life or your career.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in your career path?

While you may make your living talking to others, be the best listener you can be. You have to learn to listen before you can ask questions.

What advice would you give a current 4-H member?

Don't over evaluate a happening when it happens. Learn everything you can about everything you can.

Why should young people join 4-H today?

Take advantage of every program available and learn new things that will one day apply to your college or career experiences.
