How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?

4-H taught me to be confident. I was very shy growing up, so small tasks such as giving a talk at a meeting or interviewing about my projects were very difficult for me. Doing these things repetitively as well as having the support of my 4-H leaders helped build my confidence. Now I can publicly speak and lead a group with no problem!

Did any of your 4-H projects instill a career path for you?

Absolutely! My 4-H projects are what led me to my interest in veterinary medicine. My horse that I showed in 4-H had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a tumor out of her abdomen. The veterinarians who took care of her found out that she was my 4-H project and made sure that I was involved throughout the whole process. That is when I was inspired to become a veterinarian. I am happy to say that my horse lived through the surgery and is now almost 37 years old!

What advice do you have for someone interested in your career path?

Ask a veterinarian if they are willing to speak to your club. Older 4-H members may want to ask if they can shadow a veterinarian. We love to talk about and share our profession! Learn as much as you can through your animal projects. Even if you do not own an animal you can still learn through doing exhibit hall projects.

What advice would you give a current 4-H member?

Become involved in everything that you can. If something even seems remotely interesting to you, sign up and get involved! Some of my favorite childhood memories are through 4-H. You may not realize it now but you are gaining skills that will be beneficial to you for the rest of your life.

Why should young people join 4-H today?

4-H is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills, find your interests, and give back to the community.
