How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?

I learned so many skills in 4-H early in life that still serve me well today. I got over the fear of public speaking very early. I had the change to serve in multiple leadership roles in an organization including treasurer, secretary and president. I learned that I can be friendly, but not always best friends, with everyone in my organization.

Did 4-H instill a career path for you?

Yes! Although I started in college as a pre-med student, I realized I missed the ag community I grew up in. I switched to Pre-Vet and have been involved in mixed animal medicine ever since. A large portion of my time is spend with show animals of all species.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in your career path?

Get us much experience as you can, with as many species as you can, and keep an open mind. You may be interested in getting into veterinary medicine because you love horses; but you may find that you love canine orthopedic surgery. The more you experience, the more you can get to know yourself and your calling.

What advice would you give a current 4-H member?

This is your chance to experiment, and also your chance to shine. I recommend picking a project or role that you can be an expert at - whether that is winning the county livestock show or participating in public speaking competitions. But its also a chance to broaden your horizons; sew a dress, show a friend's horse, or go to 4-H camp!

Why should young people join 4-H today?

I wish every kid had the opportunity to be in 4-H. What a great opportunity to grow as a person, with the healthy support of parents and other adults. There is someone to help you learn in almost every interest you might have. I wish I had such an organization to be part of as an adult!
