"As a member of the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team, I learned how to engage through difference. Members brought their many identities to the experience, which allowed me to expand my knowledge and learning around diversity and inclusion as a youth."

How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?

I was always looking for a "next-level" opportunity in 4-H. Whether this was at the club, county or state level. I knew it was important to step up and lead in the 4-H organization. 4-H taught me the importance of role modeling for others, yet always being vulnerable in how to grow as a leader.

Did 4-H instill a career path for you?

My projects did not directly lead me to my career, but the hard work and determination truly supported/supports my ability to persist in my educational goals! Cattle took commitment and required me to be attentive to details; these skills I find valuable in my educational and career goals.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in your career path?

I have learned so much in the 3+ months of this pandemic about student affairs and higher education. This work requires adaptability, innovation, and knowledge on how to create support systems for a variety of identities. The day-to-day collaborative work with faculty and staff on our campus is valuable and essential to the development of college students.

What advice would you give a current 4-H member?

I believe it is important for 4-H members to push themselves out of their comfort zone. This may mean a variety of different actions: take on a leadership role, try a new project area, learn about a different culture and community, engage in difficult conversations and more.

Why should young people join 4-H today?

The 4-H organization allows individuals from a variety of experiences to share in one, collective experience. The ability to build relationships and develop a community is critical to the development of youth! More than ever, we need 4-H to create positive, respectful citizens in our communities, country, and world.
