How did 4-H contribute to your leadership skills today?
I am a leader because of 4-H. I was a Jr. Leader and attended multiple leadership conferences during my time as a 4-Her. Because of the skills I learned in 4-H, I'm able to contribute and lead out on multiple projects, not only in my job but in my personal life as well. 4-H is rooted in the connections you make, and I think that's what makes a good leader - being able to connect with others.
Did 4-H instill a career path for you?
4-H in general instilled a career path for me. I can honestly say that without 4-H I would not be where I am today. Because of 4-H, I was introduced to the University of Illinois, which was my top school when applying for colleges. Through 4-H, I was able to intern at the ACES Alumni Association while in college and reignite my passion for ag by choosing ag communications as my major. The communication and life skills I learned in 4-H helped me secure a job after graduation and now, almost 10 years later I'm so happy to be working in 4-H again at National 4-H Council!
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in your career path?
Public service is very rewarding and if you are interested in helping people and doing something different everyday, consider this as a career. You do need to have a "thick skin" though as people are more demanding of the services we provide and less diplomatic about things now.
What advice would you give a current 4-H member?
Do as much as you can in 4-H! It's truly an amazing organization with so much to offer. The more you get involved, the more you'll gain. Don't be afraid to get outside of your county (or even your state!). I learned alot from my county educators, but it was also such a great learning experience to participate in state-wide events. I was never brave enough to participate in 4-H events that took place outside of Illinois, but looking back I wish I would have taken advantage of opportunities in Washington D.C. or abroad. To simply put it - see the world, meet new people, learn from others, try new projects, make mistakes, and most importantly have fun!
Why should young people join 4-H today?
4-H is truly an amazing organization. I met some of my best friends through 4-H. This is an organization that truly cares about ALL young people and helping them get to their next stage in life. The things I learned as a 4-Her are invaluable, and I wouldn't trade my time in 4-H for anything.
