The IL 4-H DEIA Initiative
The Illinois 4-H Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative is aligned with the National 4-H campaign, Opportunity4All, which pledges to eliminate inequities for kids and help them get equal access to resources they need to thrive. Key points of the national campaign include:
- Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.
- The gap between kids is only getting wider and is largely aligned by race, family income, and where they live. The impact reveals itself as unequal access to education, technology, nutritious foods, and inspiring mentors.
- Young people will judge us not by the promises we make, but by the promises we keep. It’s time we provide opportunity for all kids.
IL 4-H DEIA Committee Purpose:
The DEIA committee will help to develop, refine, and monitor an implementation plan to advance the four strategic directions identified in the 2022-23 4-H DEIA Strategic Plan.
Those include:
- Ensure that our 4-H priorities align with the inclusion and access needs within our communities.
- Be transparent about our commitment to DEIA through our marketing, programs, resources, and opportunities.
- Work with our youth, trusted adults, families, volunteers, and staff to create accountable and inclusive spaces.
- Intentionally engage with community members who have not historically benefited from 4-H programs and resources while simultaneously examining any biases as we work with underserved communities.
Mission Statement:
“Our mission in Illinois 4-H is to champion diversity, advance equity, promote inclusion, and ensure accessibility. We strive to empower the community and partners, regardless of background or abilities, to thrive, learn and contribute to positive change.”
Objectives:
Increase Diversity and Inclusion:
- Ensure representation and participation across all levels of Illinois 4-H.
Enhance Access and Equity:
- Remove barriers to participation for marginalized and historically underserved communities.
Strengthen Community Partnerships:
- Collaborate with local organizations to support DEIA initiatives.
Promote Continuous Improvement:
- Regularly reassess and adjust strategies based on feedback and outcomes.
Support Youth Leadership in DEIA:
- Encourage and support youth-led DEIA projects and initiatives.
- Provide training and resources for youth leaders to become advocates for diversity and inclusion within their communities.
Through our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, we aim to empower every young person in 4-H to reach their full potential, develop leadership skills, and contribute positively to their communities. Together, we will build a stronger, more inclusive 4-H program that reflects the rich tapestry of our society.
