Illinois Junior Chefs is University of Illinois Extension’s new cooking school curriculum for youth ages 8-13. Teen teachers from Illinois 4-H and staff members with the Illinois Nutrition Education Programs work together to provide a fun, engaging program that allows youth to learn about nutrition, try new healthful recipes, and gain new kitchen skills. Ten hours of classes are offered during summer cooking schools, typically five lessons for two hours each. Physical activity is also encouraged during classes to aid in promoting an overall healthy lifestyle.

Class lessons include:

  • Food Safety, Measuring, and MyPlate
  • Choose Whole Grains
  • I’ll Eat These Veggies
  • Fantastic Fruits
  • Go Lean with Protein and Calcium-Rich Foods
