The National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is known for its intense competition from the nation’s most elite 4-H dairy enthusiasts. A team of Illinois 4-H members competed Nov. 3 and 4 in Louisville, Ky.
Members of the team included Dylan Houzenga, Mt. Carroll; Grace Koester, Red Bud; Kaylen Miller, Orangeville; and Rachel Scidmore, Chadwick. Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Extension 4-H dairy coordinator, and Becky Meier coached the team. The Illinois 4-H Foundation provides financial support to the team for its national competition. River Valley Dairy of Tremont and Diamond V, Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also provide support for the team.
The 4-H dairy quiz bowl is one of the nation’s most challenging contests for youth, testing the contestants’ knowledge in dairy production, dairy business management, dairy products and dairy science, Fischer said. This was the 38th year of the contest. Each team member answered a 50-question test. Teams then competed in the double elimination quiz contest.
In addition to the national 4-H contest, the Illinois team competed in the North American International Livestock Exposition youth dairy judging contest while in Louisville. Illinois took ninth in Ayrshires, 10th in Brown Swiss, and 12th overall against 23 teams.
Scidmore placed 30th and Houzenga placed 34th overall in individual competition with 88 participants.
“We can be very proud of these young people,” Fischer said. “Their display of sportsmanship and friendly attitude to all participants made me proud.”
