Project Levels

EXPLORING YOUR ENVIRONMENT 1   

In level 1, explore natural and manmade environments, learn how we affect the environment, and solve environmental problems.

EXPLORING YOUR ENVIRONMENT 2 

In level 2, learn how to be good stewards at home, school, and community; investigate greenhouse effect on living organisms; reduce and manage waste at home; and calculate your ecological footprint.

NATURAL RESOURCES 1

In level 1, classify animals as domestic or wildlife, build a miniature ecosystem, build an indoor wildlife habitat, and do a splash erosion experiment.

NATURAL RESOURCES 2

In level 2, make a compost column, develop habitat improvement plan, interview a water quality expert, and conduct a soil percolation test.

NATURAL RESOURCES 3

In level 3, conduct a nature hike, design a landscape using trees, make a video on a natural resource topic, and interview someone with a natural resources career.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES 1

In level 1, pack a backpack and take a day hike, choose clothes for hikes, assemble a first aid kit, learn about “leave no trace” ethics, and identify hazardous weather situations.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES 2

In level 2, learn to purify water, tie rope knots, plan a menu, select a camp stove, and select a camp site.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES 3

In level 3, pack a backpack and tent, plan food supplies, use a map and compass, develop an emergency procedure, and adopt “Leave No Trace” principles.

State Fair Exhibit Rules

Each county may submit 3 entries from 50256, 50257, 50258, 50259; 1 entry from 50267. Electricity and water are NOT available for these displays. NO live animals or reptiles are permitted in these exhibits.

Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Step Into Nature.

Natural Resources 2 (SF 50257)

Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Explore the Natural World.

Natural Resources 3 (SF 50258)

Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Blaze the Trail.

Outdoor Adventures 1: (SF 50259)

Exhibit a display illustrating an activity completed from the project manual.

Outdoor Adventures 2 (SF 50259)

Exhibit a display illustrating an activity completed from the project manual.

Outdoor Adventures 3 (SF 50259)

Natural Resources Ready4Life Challenge (SF 50267)

Open to 11- to 18-year-olds enrolled in any Natural Resources and Outdoor Adventures project.

Exhibits in this category must include the following: a) a physical representation of the career or business product such as a model, prototype or display/portfolio that includes images of accomplished work; b) verbal or written explanations that demonstrate knowledge of the related career or business fields, potential careers, and the appropriate requirements for achievement in those fields. The judging criteria for this class values thoroughness of career and/or business exploration and pursuit above the workmanship of the physical specimen on display.

Exploring Your Environment 1

Prepare a display or poster that illustrates an activity from the project manual. The display should demonstrate an understanding of natural and/or manmade environments, how humans affect the environment, or how the environment affects our lives. Include your project manual that documents activity recordkeeping, your answers to activity questions, and details the exhibitor’s thoughts and ideas.

Exploring Your Environment 2

Prepare a display or poster that illustrates an activity from the project manual. The display should demonstrate an understanding of one of the following: stewardship of natural resources, investigating greenhouse effects on living organisms, methods of reducing or managing waste in your home or community, or calculating your ecological footprint. Include your project manual that documents activity recordkeeping, your answers to activity questions, and details the exhibitor’s thoughts and ideas.
