4-H Is Creating the Leaders We Need Today

4-H recognizes that youth are an important resource in our communities. 4-H doesn’t teach youth to be leaders someday in the future; 4-H places youth in meaningful leadership roles today and surrounds them with caring, supportive adults. Meet Thad Hughes. The 19-year-old McLean County 4-H member is the national 2016 Youth in Action award winner.

Thad has engaged more than 6,000 youth in science. He mentors in FIRST Lego League and the Illinois State Robotics Competition. He developed an afterschool program for McLean County Extension called Spinning Robots, in which he taught 50 middle schoolers basic circuitry and how to build simple robots.

Thad works to turn an idea into reality. “It’s satisfying to know I built something. I didn’t just come up with an idea; I made it a reality.”
